Education

The Nashville Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) offers a wide variety of unique and important resources for its members — supporting the AFP's mission to advance philanthropy through education, training and advocacy.

Nashville Chapter resources include (click on a link among these topics to select one, or you may scroll down the page to learn more).

Monthly meetings

The Nashville Chapter typically holds a Chapter meeting on the third Wednesday of each month (with the exception of June and July). Most Chapter meetings are lunch meetings held from 11:30 until 1:00 p.m. Be sure to check the website calendar for details.

Each meeting features a guest speaker providing perspective and insight into the field of fundraising and development. Past programs have included such dynamic speakers as Ruth Ann Harnisch, Orrin Ingram, and Chancellor Gordon Gee of Vanderbilt University, just to name a few. Chapter meetings are open to the public as well as to AFP members.

Web Conferences

Each year, the Nashville Chapter hosts a number of web conferences transmitted via Internet. These conferences deal with topics most requested from the AFP Resource Center. Programs are presented by some of the profession’s best-known experts. Web conferences are held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m on select dates. Attendees may purchase a boxed lunch for an additional $10 or bring a "brown bag" lunch.

Courses

The Nashville Chapter offers one professional advancement program each year: First Course in Fundraising or CFRE Review Course (fka Survey Course in Fundraising). The AFP First Course in Fundraising offers a complete overview of the development function and gives professionals a fundamental understanding of the entire development process. The CFRE Review Course is an intensive, two-day program which provides intermediate-level fundraisers with an overview of fundraising skills and techniques and focuses on the main components of a complete fundraising program.

Mentoring and Networking

In addition to monthly meetings, audio-conferences, and educational events, AFP Nashville offers two forms of small group or individualized services for its members.

Networking Groups

AFP Nashville currently offers three networking groups. Each group is designed to meet the needs of development professionals within specific nonprofit work environments. The three groups are: 1) Education and Youth Services; 2) Healthcare; and 3) Senior Level Professionals. Each of the three groups welcomes new members throughout the year.

Each networking group meets once a quarter. The group liaison determines an appropriate meeting time, location, and agenda. Groups may explore a predetermined topic or invite a guest speaker for one session, and allow for brainstorming or a round table discussion at a session later in the year.

For more information about a particular networking group or to express interest in forming an additional networking group, please contact the Chapter at info@afpnashville.org.

Scholarships

In an effort to help AFP members in their professional development, the Nashville AFP chapter offers the following four scholarship opportunities. Mailed applications must be postmarked by the dates shown below.  Emailed applications are also accepted at info@afpnashville.org

Current or Returning Member Assistance Scholarships

Since many nonprofits have reduced funds for professional fees, many of our AFP members are faced with paying their dues from personal funds.  The Nashville AFP chapter is offering four $100 scholarships for those members whose organizations do not pay their dues.  Applications are accepted year round with one scholarship given each quarter.
